Offering Radiation Protection advice to schools
This service applies to local Schools and Academies subscribing to the CLEAPSS local authority Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) Service. In this scheme, a local authority appoints one of its officers as a Radiation Protection Officer (RPO). (This is not a legal term but a convenient description of their role.) The RPO is the link between the schools and the RPA. The schools in the scheme will not normally need to contact the RPA directly, except perhaps in an emergency. CLEAPSS provides training for RPOs in the scheme.
In the scheme, the RPA does not normally visit the schools. Instead, the RPO will visit the schools initially then biennially to monitor they are managing the radioactive sources properly, and reassure their employer that the arrangements for radiation protection are working. The RPO must give information to the RPA about the sources held by the schools. The advice given by the RPA is passed onto the schools by the RPO. The RPO monitors schools to ensure that this is implemented.
