Providing comprehensive training, support and information for governors
The importance and significance of outstanding governance and leadership across our education system has never been greater. Defining and implementing strategy whilst holding the leaders of schools and trusts to account has become a key role of governors and governing boards.
Being an effective governing board relies on fit for purpose training and development and Ofsted will expect schools to demonstrate that their governing board is effective and has made full use of training opportunities. The national focus on governing boards becoming more 'professional' in their practice continues, evident in the current Ofsted framework where governance is judged as part of the leadership and management function. Inspectors make reference to governors’ training and in a recent Ofsted School Inspection Update – November 2016, it was pledged that Ofsted would;
‘report more robustly on the extent governors are committed to their own professional development” to secure “sustained improvements” in governance practices’.
The Governor Support and Training team offers a blended learning approach to the development of governors through centrally run face to face training sessions, governor networking sessions and regular updates on developments. All training is interconnected with the core strategic functions of school governance and the requirements of Ofsted. It is regularly reviewed and updated in response to changes affecting governance and education as well as tailored for particular groups or customised to meet local need.
Some of the key themes for training have focussed on;
• National education policy and the local education context
• New governor induction
• Key features of effective governance
• Tools and techniques for strategic planning
• The difference between strategic and operational decisions
• Understanding data
• Monitoring progress towards strategic goals
