Teaching the Year 2 and 3 English and Mathematics Curriculum

It’s not all about Year 6!

Outline

From looking at the Maths SATs papers over the last two of years, it is clear that there is an emphasis on new aspects of the curriculum such as calculating with fractions and the ability to multiply and divide by two-digit numbers. There is also a need for children to know mathematical facts and to have a good understanding of mathematical language in order to solve problems on the reasoning papers. These crucial aspects of mathematics are not just from the Year 6 curriculum and therefore we must ensure that children are secure with maths from Years 2 & 3.

Description

Year 2 and 3 teachers will explore pitch and coverage for each phase, whilst developing an understanding about their part in the preparation for the end of phase testing. Teachers will also explore the teaching of the formal written methods for the four operations and investigate how Bruner’s approach of concrete-pictorial-abstract (CPA) helps to support children in conceptual understanding. We will also focus on growth mindset and metacognition and how this can enhance the learning of mathematics.
Trainers: Claire Pettman, Deputy head teacher, Belmont School and leading mathematics teacher; Nikki Garlick, Year 2 teacher, Belmont School.

Venue: Danson Primary School, Danson Lane Welling DA16 2BL
Trainer: Emma Blackman, Teaching and Learning Advisor - Maths

Outcomes

This course aims:
  • To clarify the pitch and expectations to ensure children are being suitably challenged.
  • Teachers will explore the curriculum and identify topics which underpin mathematical teaching.
  • The CPA approach will be linked to the recording of formal written methods.
  • Activities to support greater depth.
  • Activities to help differentiate activities so that all children achieve the same objective through scaffolding or through added constraints.
  • Year 2 and Year 3 moderation and assessment.
  • The importance of questioning and the role of meta-cognition in children’s self-evaluation.
  • A range of helpful websites will be explored.

You will be equipped with the knowledge and understanding to deliver in depth coverage of the Year 2 and Year 3 curriculum; including multiplication tables and the written formal methods. Through this course, you will have a clearer understanding of pitch and expectations required for your year group.
